ramblings of a m/m romance author

Category: Strawberries for Dessert

Home again!

I returned Monday evening from a weekend at Capital City Pride in Des Moines, Iowa with Heidi Cullinan (and because I grew tired of fighting with WordPress, you will have to look at the post below to see photos).  It was so much fun.  I sold a few books, handed out about a billions cards, got sunburned, rained on, hit on, and eventually returned to Colorado feeling like something that one of Heidi’s cats might have dragged in.  Honestly, I can’t wait to do it again!

Strawberries for Dessert is now in the editing stage with Dreamspinner Press.  If you haven’t seen it yet, I do have the official blurb now, so check out the SfD page (link on the right).  I’ll post cover art as soon as I have it.

My story One More Soldier has been accepted by Silver Publishing.  This will be my first published story that is in no way related to my boys from Coda, so it seemed appropriate that it come from a different publisher.  I’ll post more info on that too, as I receive it.

I vowed to myself that I was going to tackle Cockaigne upon returning from Iowa, although the truth is, I had a couple of new ideas frolicking around in my head as I drove across Nebraska.  Honestly, I have no idea what I’m going to do next.  Between getting our house ready for the market, going on vacation, having my daughter’s birthday party and relatives in town, and going to Des Moines, the last six weeks have felt like complete chaos.  At the moment, I’m just happy to have my normal life back at last.  I think I’ll just sit back and relax for a few days at least, and see which of the voices in my head is most adamant about being heard.

Three things: A guest post by Angelo

Yeah, I know you all want Cole.  But he’s not here, and I am.  So I guess you’re stuck with me.  Marie says that with The Letter Z bein’ released only four days from now, I gotta make myself more visible. What the fuck ever.  She at least took pity on me and gave me a nice little list of shit I’m s’posed to tell you.

First: Congratulations to Marie’s good friend Ethan Stone. Haven’t heard of Ethan?  That’s ’cause he’s not published yet. But just last week, Dreamspinner Press accepted a short story of his, plus his very first novel.  Both of ‘em will be available sometime this summer.  So Marie says, congrats to Ethan.  Ethan, if you’re readin’ this: I know you, man.  And I know you got the hots for Zach.  So just keep your hands to yourself and nobody has to get hurt.  Got it?

Pretty sure Marie didn’t want me threatenin’ her friend while I was here, so…

Second: For those of you dyin’ to see more of Cole (yeah, Scarlett, I got your number too!), Strawberries for Dessert will be released by DSP sometime this summer.  Probably in July.  Marie’ll post cover art and an official release date as soon as they’re available.

Speakin’ of release dates, that brings me to the third thing: this Wednesday, May 12, is the release of The Letter Z.  Marie says she’s got somethin’ fun lined up for you.  I gotta tell you, I didn’t really like the look in her eyes when she said it, either.  I’m pretty sure whatever it is, I’m not gonna like it.  But Marie calls the shots ’round here, and she says, make sure you check back here on Wednesday.  You’re not gonna want to miss it.  That’s what she says.

What the fuck ever.

It's official, darling.

I know you’re all just dying to hear how my story is progressing.  Well darlings, I’m thrilled to be able to tell you that Marie sent it on to Dreamspinner Press just this afternoon.  All that remains now is for them to accept it.  Marie still has some nerves about the whole submission process, but really, what’s there to worry about, right?  After all, I am terribly fun.  All in all, I think the book turned out rather well, even if Jonathan does get to tell most of the story.

Marie thinks she might try to revisit that slowly turning planet of hers next.  And she has a couple of other ideas involving Jonathan and I.  I told her she should get started right away, and Scarlett tells me that God Himself has threatened a few plagues if she doesn’t get going.  But Marie says everything has to wait until after her cruise.  She’s so dreadfully predictable, isn’t she?

She’s also asked me to tell you that there is still no official release date for The Letter Z.  You do all know I make a cameo in that story, right?  And of course Jonathan’s there too, although I hear his behavior was simply dreadful in Vegas.  Well, I’ll leave it for you all to decide.  Whatever happens though, don’t hold it against him.  He’s not a bad guy, really, even if he is a pain in the ass sometimes.

And you know what I have to say about that.

Birthdays

This really isn’t important to anybody but me, I’m sure.  But I’ve come to realize that I need to write down all of these birthdays, or I’m bound to get confused and give somebody two different ones.  So, for any of you who might care, I decided to list them here.

Matt: Jan 18

Me: Feb 11

Cole: April 3

Zach: April 14

Angelo: June 23 (isn’t it just like Ang to not even mention it to Zach in A to Z?)

Jared: Sept 21

George: Oct 10

Jon: Nov 12

And, I suppose this is as good a time as any to tell you that Strawberries for Dessert is nearing the final stages.  I think it’s almost complete.  I debated a title change a couple of days ago, but decided against it.  Current word count is about 73,400 words.  Right now, I’m thinking I should be able to submit it in the next week or two.  With any luck, you’ll be able to read it sometime this summer.  Hooray!

Finished!! (sort of)

Strawberries for Dessert is finished!  And by that I mean, the first draft is written.  Now I just have to wait for several wonderful people to read it for me and give me their input.  Then edit, possibly re-write, edit some more…

Did I say it was finished?  Well, close enough to break out the champagne.

A random assortment of updates…

Where to begin?

In case you missed it, Jon and Cole’s story has been given a title.  Unless I change my mind (which has been known to happen) it will be called Strawberries for Dessert.  I’m so excited about this book.  I just passed 50,000 words on it today, and right now, it almost feels like it’s writing itself.  I love this point in the game, where all of the pieces start to fall into place (hang on while I find some wood to knock on).  I hope to have the first draft done within the next week.  All I can say is, I sure hope you’re all ready for more of Cole!

The Letter Z has just entered the editing process with Dreamspinner Press.  I also received the first draft of the blurb for the book.  I hate blurbs.  Really.  I can’t say it with enough emphasis.  I hate blurbs.  It’s hard to know what to reveal and what to keep quiet, and to drop just enough information to interest readers, but not so much that you give the story away.  One more time: I hate blurbs.  But they must be done.  The Letter Z is expected to be released in e-book format sometime in May.  I’ll post more info on that right here, as it becomes available.

I’m going on a writer’s workshop cruise in late May with the fabulous Lynn Flewelling!  Info for the cruise can be found here.  Anybody care to join me?  I’ve never been on a cruise before, and I absolutely can’t wait.

On a more personal level, my husband and I have decided to sell our house.  We hope to have it on the market by the time we leave for the cruise.  And in case you’re wondering, yes, we must be insane.  I have no idea what we were thinking.

So, to sum it up, over the next six weeks, all I have to do is finish Strawberries for Dessert, get through the editing process on The Letter Z, get our entire house ready for the market (and let me tell you, right at the moment, it is a disaster), and pack for a cruise.  Oh.  I forgot to mention that we’ll have family in town for my daughter’s sixth birthday about three days after we get home from the cruise. And, I’ll be hosting a Dreamspinner Press table at the Des Moines Pride Parade the weekend after that with my fellow DSP author Heidi Cullinan.

Like I said: insane.

Well, I brought it all on myself, and the only thing to do is quit fooling around here and get busy.  Besides, I hear Cole calling me.  He’s such a pain in the ass.  And darling, that is not a sexual innuendo.

Cole and Jon have a title!

I was lying awake last night, thinking about Jon and Cole.  I had a couple of interesting revelations about how I seem to have a food theme going which I never really planned on.  I woke up this morning and started chatting online with my friend about this.  And suddenly…

Ta-da!!  I have a title!

Cole and Jon’s book is now officially called Strawberries for Dessert.

And I just start to giggle every time I think about it.

Guest post by Cole

I make one little comment on Marie’s Facebook page, and the next thing I know, she’s hounding me to make a post on her blog too.  It’s awfully tiresome, but I did agree to do it.  You’ll have to forgive me though darlings if I just copy/paste what I already said over there.  You see, I really am in a bit of a rush at the moment.

Marie’s thinking about taking a second shot at writing my story now.  Well, it’s about time, isn’t it?  The problem is, who’s going to tell it? First she thought it would be Jonathan, but we all know he can be so uptight. Well, I guess you don’t know, but if The Letter Z ends up being published, you’ll find out. Trust me.  His narration is bound to have us all in yawns. So now Marie thinks maybe I should do it.

The truth is, I’m just not sure she has it in her to follow me from Phoenix to Paris to the Hamptons and back again. She’s not exactly well-traveled now, is she? Such a shame, too, because I really am terribly fun. Vail she could do, but I hardly go any more. It’s just not as entertaining now that Jared’s seeing that big angry cop. Marie’s also prattling on about how I might not really know enough about my own flamboyant affectations, and my habit of using them to hide my real feelings. She says she needs Jonny for that. Oh my. I must admit, I have absolutely no idea what she’s going on about. I’ve really stopped listening to her altogether. I’m sure you all can relate.

I guess Jonny and I could do what Zach and Angelo did and take turns. And darling, that is not a sexual innuendo. But Marie never intended to make a habit of the dual POV, you see. I could send her back to that slowly-turning planet she and her hubby have been cooking up, but really, we might all be waiting ages for her to figure that out, and darling, I just don’t have the time.

Speaking of time, I really do have a plane to catch. There’s a house in Kapoho calling my name. And I hear Marie’s brother-in-law has a roommate I might want to meat (and no dear, that wasn’t a typo).
